Prabhu Deva Biography – Indian Micheal Jackson

<img scr="Prabhu Deva" alt="Indian Micheal Jackson"/>

Born:              April 3, 1973, Mysore

Film:               Vetri Vizha, Kadhalan, ABCD 2

Profession:   Choreographer, Actor, Film director

INDIAN MICHEAL JACKSON

Prabhu Deva Sundaram was born in Mysore, India, on April 3, 1973, and grew up in Alwarpet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was inspired by his father, Sundaram, who was a dance master for popular South Indian movies. He took dancing as his career and passion, by learning Bharatanatyam and western dance styles.

Personal Life:

Talking about his personal life Deva married Ramlath. The couple had three children namely Vishal, Aditya, and Rishi. According to the report, his eldest son died at the age of 14 in 2008 due to cancer. After lining together for 15 years, the couple parted ways in 2010.

His brothers Raju Sundaram and Nagendra Prasad are also South Indian choreographers. From choreography, he went on to establish himself as an actor. His dance steps helped him become a star in Kollywood (the Tamil film industry). His first movie as a dance director was Vetri Vizha. He has since choreographed in over 100 movies.

His CAREER:

As an Actor
Prabhu Deva made his acting in 1994 with Indhu, a Tamil language film directed by Pavithran. The film co-starring Roja, R. Sarathkumar, and Kushboo emerged to be a huge commercial hit. In the same year, the actor appeared in his first action-romance film, Kadhalan (1994), opposite Nagma. The film won wide critical appreciation as well as won several recognitions including Four National Film Awards. The music composed by maestro A.R. Rahman was immensely popular and the song Mukkabala became a national sensation. Owing to the popularity of the movie, it was later dubbed in Hindi as Humse Hai Muqabala and in Telugu as Premikudu.

Prabhu Deva got his next breakthrough in 1997 when he starred in Minsara Kanavu, a romantic drama co-starring Arvind Swamy and Kajol. The film won rave critical reviews and garnered several accolades including National Film Awards, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and one Filmfare Award. In 1998, he starred alongside Kamal Haasan, Soundarya, and Rambha in the comedy film Kaathala Kaathala, directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. The film opened to positive reviews and emerged to be a hit at the box office.

By the advent of the new millennium, Prabhu Deva had already established himself as one of the most sought-after actors in the Tamil film industry. He kicked off the new millennium on a high as his first release in the year, Vaanathaippola (2000), went on to win the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The actor had four other releases in the same year: Ezhaiyin Sirippil, James Pandu, Pennin Manathai Thottu, and Doubles but only Pennin Manathai Thottu fared well at the box office while others were either average earners or flops.

The year 2002 was the year of `firsts` for Prabhu Deva as he made his debut in Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi film industries with H2O, Santosham, and Agni Varsha. While his Kannada and Telugu films received highly positive reviews and were a box office hit, his Hindi film co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Nagarjuna, and Raveena Tandon failed at the box office.

While 2003 was a forgettable year for Prabhu Deva with all three of his releases failing to do well, the actor had a good run in 2004 as both his Telugu films – Tapana directed by Tejas Dhanraj and Intlo Srimathi Veedhilo Kumari directed by K.Vasu – performed well at the box office. His only Tamil film of the year Engal Anna co-starring Vijayakanth and Pandiarajan was declared a box office hit. With no releases to his name in 2005, the actor started 2006 on a successful note with a Telugu film titled Style directed by Raghava Lawrence. The film was later released in Tamil as Lakshyam.

Post-2006, Deva did not have any significant release until 2011, when he made his debut in Malayalam cinema with the historical drama Urumi, co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran. After the huge success of his Malayalam debut, the actor appeared in the Hindi film ABCD – Any Body Can Dance, which released in February 2013. ABCD opened to mostly positive critical reviews and emerged as a box office hit. His next film was ABCD 2 (2015), which was directed by Remo D`Souza and also featured Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor in central roles. The movie was a box office success.

In 2016, Deva appeared in the hit trilingual film Devi, which he also produced. The actor`s sole release in 2017 was the romantic drama Kalavaadiya Pozhuthugal co-starring Bhumika Chawla and Prakash Raj, which received mixed to positive reviews upon its release. In 2018, Deva starred in the Tamil gangster comedy Gulaebaghavali, the experimental horror thriller Mercury and the musical dance drama Lakshmi. While the critical reception for Gulaebaghavali was mixed, the latter two films received generally positive reviews; and all the three films were moderate box office successes. Among the actor`s other notable projects in recent times is the comedy Charlie Chaplin 2 (2019), the action movie Pon Manickavel (2019), the horror-comedy Devi 2 (2019), and Khamoshi (2019).

As a Director

The stalwart actor made his debut as a director in 2004 with a Telugu movie Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana. The film, which starred Siddharth Narayan and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles, was a blockbuster. Following its huge success, the film was later remade in Tamil as Something Something…Unakkum Enakkum (2006) and in Hindi as Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013). Following the success of the directorial debut venture, Prabhu Deva next directed Pournami, which starred Prabhas and Trisha Krishnan. Despite the huge hype around the film, it did not perform well at the box office.

In 2007, Prabhu Deva got his major break as a director with the blockbuster Tamil film Pokkiri, which featured Vijay, Asin Thottumkal, and Prakash Raj in central roles. Following the huge success of the film, he later remade it in Hindi as Wanted (2009) with Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia in the lead roles. Just like the Tamil film, the Hindi version too received highly positive reviews as well as emerged to be a massive commercial hit. In 2011, Prabhu Deva had two directorial ventures – the romantic drama Engeyum Kaadhal and the action thriller Vedi. However, both the films failed to impress.

In 2012, Prabhu Deva enjoyed further success as a director as he made Rowdy Rathore, a Bollywood action drama starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. Although the film got mixed critical reviews, it was declared a blockbuster. Next up was the action-masala film R…Rajkumar (2013), starring Shahid Kapoor. The movie received mixed critics reviews and had a decent opening at the box office.

In 2014, Prabhu Deva directed the Ajay Devgn starrer Action Jackson. Although the movie had created a lot of hype before its release, it got terrible reviews from the critic and failed at the box office. However, Deva made a strong comeback with Singh is Bling, a Bollywood action comedy film released in October 2015. His 2019 releases as a director include Dabangg 3. His 2020 release includes Pon Manickavel.

As a Producer

The actor-turned-director also turned producer in 2016; his production ventures in the year included Sila Samayangalil, Vinodhan, Bogan, and Devi, while the first three movies were Tamil films, the latter was a Trilingual film which released in Telugu and Hindi besides Tamil. His 2020 release includes Street Dancer 3, directed by Remo D`Souza.

Rishi Kapoor: Acting Carrer

Rishi Kapoor’s first-ever movie role was in his father’s film Shree 420. Rishi can be seen walking with two other children through the rain in ‘Pyaar Hua, Iqraar Hua’ song of Shree 420.

In 1970, Rishi Kapoor made a debut from his father Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Mera Naam Joker’ where he plays the childhood role of his own father. In 1973, he had his first lead role opposite Dimple Kapadia in the film ‘Bobby’ and became an instant hit among the youngsters.

From 1974-1997, Rishi Kapoor did films with solo leads and only 11 films did well on the box office while the other 40 films were a flop. The 11 hit films were– Bobby, Laila Majnu, Rafoo Chakkar, Sargam, Karz, Prem Rog, Nagina, Honeymoon, Banjaran, Heena, and Bol Radha Bol.

From 1974-1981, Rishi Kapoor paired with his future wife Neetu Kapoor, but the pair didn’t create magic. Only multi-starter movies with Neetu Kapoor were hit–Khel Khel Mein, Kabhie Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Duniya Meri Jeb Mein. The movies where Rishi Kapoor was in a lead role with Neetu Kapoor were flop– Zehreela Insaan, Zinda Dil, Doosra Aadmi, Anjane Mein, Jhoota Kahin Ka, Dhan Daulat.

From 1977-1994, Rishi Kapoor was offered the roles of younger brothers in multi-starer films. From 1976-2000, Rishi Kapoor acted in 41 multi-starer films and was cast as the second or the third lead hero. Out of these, 25 films were hit and 16 were a flop at the box office.

In the 90s, Rishi Kapoor’s film Deewana, Damini, and Eena Meena Dika were successful. Kapoor got plum lead hero roles a few times in two-lead hero films– Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin, Badalte Roshtey, Aap Ke Deewane, Saagar then in the ’90s with Chandni, Deewana(1992), Damini(1993) and Gurudev (1994).

In 1999, Rishi Kapoor directed the film ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen’. In 2000, he did his last romantic lead in the film ‘Karobaar: The Business of Love’ which was a flop. After his several box office flops as the lead role, Rishi Kapoor did supporting roles in the 2000s.

Rishi Kapoor also acted in the British films– Don’t Stop Dreaming and Sambar Salsa. In 2010, Kapoor paired with Neetu Kapoor in the film ‘Do Dooni Chaar’. He also acted in the film Chintu Ji where he plays himself.

In 2012, Rishi Kapoor appeared in  Agneepath as a villain and in multi-starer Housefull with his brother Randhir Kapoor for the first time.

In an interview in 2012, Rishi Kapoor stated, ‘I landed in Bobby by default. There was a misconception that the film was made to launch me as an actor. The film was actually made to pay the debts of Mera Naam Joker. Dad wanted to make a love story and he did not have money to cast superstar Rajesh Khanna in the film. So the story was converted to a teenage love story and I was cast.’

Best Way To Launch Your Product

Best Way To Launch Your Product!

Heighten your visibility, avoid costly mistakes and build buzz with these strategies

You’ve created the killer product that will change the world. Now you need people to buy it. Top entrepreneurs share their tried-and-tested ways to build buzz so people buy from you and passionately spread the word for mega profits.

<img scr="first dance events" alt="Product launch events"/>

  1. Be strategic

One, find your core audience. Whether you’re creating the new iPhone or a cupcake stand, find and learn from your core audience. Establish your base and build their confidence in you.

Two, get advice and listen. Most friends will be your biggest cheerleaders, but that doesn’t mean they’re helping. They need to poke holes in your ideas, which you can fix before taking a product to market. Resist the urge to be defensive. And use the opportunity to strengthen your product.

Three, learn from others. There are no more original ideas, just repurposed ones. As you prepare to market your idea, examine your competitors. Take from their good, learn from their bad, and enhance what needs to be improved. Then put your spin on it.

Four, be smart about publicity. You no longer need traditional media to drive ideas, products or messages. Don’t get caught up in creating a PR budget if it won’t drive core business. Instead, spend your time creating messages to buyers.

Five, conditioning your social media audience is critical. Always pushing them to “buy” creates fatigue, making them feel like a number. Build a relationship with your audience at least three months in advance so they can learn your tone and rhythms. Then seek ways for them to interact with your product.

Six, for all your analysis, don’t forget to rely on “feel.” Entrepreneurs are risk takers with unwavering belief. Don’t abandon that now that you’re moments away from the launch.

Finally, use the power of broke. I wrote a book about this. My biggest business mistakes came when I tried to buy success. My most successful business experiences came from using limited resources, supported by innovation. Resist the urge to spend, spend, and spend.

  1. Go overboard with outreach

Obscurity kills businesses. If you don’t go overboard, you won’t get the attention needed to be successful. Before launching a new product, ask yourself: One, How far will I go to get attention? Two, How frequent will I be in my attempts?

  1. Use common sense

Know your audience. If someone asks you, “Who’s your target audience?” have a concise answer. Otherwise, there’s a problem. Also, get to know your stakeholders. Find out where they spend their free time and join them after work. Events are great for getting your product into the community. Consider sponsoring a mixer at a local restaurant, brewery or wine bar to draw interest.

Know your product’s value. Interview a client who found success using your product. Ask them why it was successful.

With branding and promotion, have a multimedia approach that includes print, photography and video. Don’t treat hash tags as an afterthought; they’re a powerful tool to grab eyeballs. Use them intentionally. Follow and engage with reporters on social media who can direct attention to your product. Ask a local celebrity, like the mayor, to do an on-camera interview. Worst case, they say, “No.” Best case, they authenticate your brand.

  1. Target major media outlets

Attention is the currency of the internet. The average person consumes an inordinate amount of information daily. To get attention, cut through the noise.

With the right strategy, you can land a major media placement. Pitch yourself as an expert and target high-profile news outlets. Figure out what story segments producers want. They’re under pressure to book the right experts, so there’s a good chance your knowledge fills a gap.

  1. Build your super fans

Don’t jump into launching a product without first building a community of super fans who’ll vouch for it. Lay the foundation to build the buzz later. It may take one to two years, but it’s worth it. You could start with conferences. Hunt for your target audience. Invite them to join a value-add Slack group or receive exclusive invitations to your events.

After launching, if your fans don’t resonate with your product, revisit square one. Don’t judge your market; listen because they’re telling you what they want. Fix the current product to their liking and they’ll build the buzz it deserves. And you’ll avoid losing a lot of money, wondering why your promotions didn’t go as planned.

  1. Bring brand ambassadors into your business family

It takes a village to get buzz for your business. Find ambassadors whose interests align with yours and bring them into your business family.

  1. Use pre-launch videos to drive leads

Use a pre-launch video campaign to jump-start product sales and build brand awareness. Your price point should correlate with the length of your video content. While lower-priced items require 15 to 60 seconds of video, a more significant ask is best served by a five- to 15-minute pre-launch video campaign.

Use a landing page with a sign-up form to capture email addresses. Then, create an email campaign that offers special incentives to buyers who refer family and friends.

A respected influencer gives instant product credibility. Get industry influencers to put your product in front of their fans through endorsement campaigns.

  1. Technology is your friend

Webinars are perfect for spreading your message in an attractive, engaging form. Here’s how to maximize your success:

One, research and choose the right webinar software: easy to use, requires no IT knowledge, downloads or installations, and is ready to go — time is money. The software should give you the necessary tools for the whole process — before, during and after the webinar.

Two, host webinars on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. That’s when you’ll get the best attendance.

Three, craft a “catchy” topic name to draw the largest audience: “The Marketing Platform of Your Dreams” is more enticing than “New Marketing Automation Platform.”

Four, tell everyone about your launch via every means possible: email, your website and social media.

Five, prepare an agenda. Tell your audience what to expect from your webinar, with the intended topics. Don’t forget timing: Our research found that a webinar shouldn’t exceed one hour — 30-40 minutes for your presentation and 15 to 20 minutes for Q&A.

Six, focus on solving a problem your audience may face. Subtly incorporate your product into the discussion, but concentrate more on the outcome and less on the product.

With a strategic approach, webinars reach, educate and engage your audience, earn their trust, improve your conversion rates and, ultimately, impact your bottom line.

Bone spurs, back and neck pain, potbelly, headaches, and reduced lung capacity are all symptoms of bad posture. But the less obvious consequences of slouching include changes in mood, confidence, motivation, and stress levels.

Pretty bleak. The good news? There are ways to develop better posture at any age in any condition.

Dance: Posture Therapy!

First Dance Classes

Dancers are notorious for having good posture, but you don’t have to be a ballerina to look graceful and confident. Many forms of dance give you the tools to improve posture and balance. More importantly, learning to dance is just plain funDance is social, a mood booster, and a low impact., in particular, know that posture is key to have a good connection with a partner.

Dance Exercises for Good Posture!

Dance helps strengthen muscles and increase flexibility that helps prevent poor posture. Don’t consider yourself a dancer? You don’t have to be. Many people learn social dancing just for fun and develop good posture along the way. Here are some exercises that dancers use to develop a better posture:

  • Spine extensions. Imagine there’s a string running from the top of your head down to your toes and somebody is pulling on that string. Body awareness is the first step to helping improve your stance and helps in any dance.
  • Arm ups. Starting with arms at your sides, lift up as high and as far back as you can. Make sure shoulders are as far away from your ears as possible. This helps stretch and open the rib cage and bring shoulders into the proper position in your dance frame.
  • Chin tuck and Jut. While keeping your head level, jut your chin out then tuck it back as far you can. This strengthens the cervical retraction muscles and keeps your head and neck in the right place when in dance position.
  • Shoulder circles. Roll your shoulders forward then backward. This “resets” your spine and shoulders throughout the day and improves flexibility for arm styling.
  • Shoulder blade squeezes. Squeeze your shoulder blades together then put them in your back pockets. This engages your latissimus muscles and helps you feel your partner’s lead or follow.

Why You Should Work On Your Posture!

Posture is not only important for physical health and grace, but research also shows that improving posture through dance may improve your mood and outlook on life too.

Posture Affects Mood

The way we carry ourselves has a huge impact on how others perceive us and how we perceive ourselves — on or off the dance floor. Not only does it look “bad” or “weak” to slouch, but posture also affects how we feel about ourselves.

A series of experiments published in Health Psychology found that sitting in a slouched, defensive position makes it easier for negative thoughts and memories to appear while sitting in an upright position makes us more resilient to stress and promotes more positive thoughts. Your posture tells your brain that you’re confident, and that will affect your attitude when walking into a meeting or asking somebody to dance.

What Is The Difference Between Salsa & Bachata?

I am here to help you!

People do not understand that what they should learn Salsa or Bachata? So here we are, I will say both… because of Salsa more about fun, fast footwork, multiple spins, and very fast pace, whereas the Bachata is more into a slow pace, romantic songs, and sensual moves.

bachata dance classes

  • Intimacy: While both Salsa and Bachata are couple dances, Bachata is more intimate than Salsa. While the steps matter a lot in Salsa, the chemistry between the couple matters much more in Bachata. The couple is closer to each other in Bachata, hugging each other almost all the time.

  • Pace: Salsa is generally faster than Bachata. There are slow Salsa songs as well, but those would be exceptions. As a result, Bachata is also considered slightly easier than Salsa.

  • Popularity: Salsa is more popular than Bachata, and is generally more well known across the world. However, most pubs also play Bachata songs along with Salsa songs during the Salsa nights.

  • Beats: The beats of Salsa go as “1..2..3……5..6..7……”, so there is a pause after the third and seventh beat. The fourth and eighth beats are covered in those pauses. On the other hand, the beats of Bachata go as “1..2..3..tap..5..6..7..tap..”. So there are 3 beats and a tap, followed by 3 more beats and a tap.

 Salsa:

The roots of salsa originated in Eastern Cuba (Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo) from the
Cuban Son (about 1920) and Afro-Cuban dance (like Afro-Cuban rumba). There, Spanish and
Afro-Cuban musical elements were combined, both in terms of rhythm and the instruments
used.

Type of Salsa Style:

  • Salsa Casino (Cuban style)
  • Salsa Casino (Miami style)
  • Afro-Latino style
  • Cali style (Colombian Salsa)
  • Rueda de Casino
  • Los Angeles style (ON 1)
  • New York-style (ON 2)
Bachata:

Bachata is a style of dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is danced widely all over the world but not identically. The basics of the dance are three-step with a Cuban hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat.

Type Of Bachata:

  • Dominican/Authentic
  • Western/Traditional
  • Sensual
  • Modern

CHRISTIAN OTH STUDIO

Committing to eternity is a lot, and is so finding the exact song to encapsulate that forever feeling. Whether you’re looking for something light, something romantic, or something a bit more dramatic, we’ve taken all of the best anthems, bops, and slow jams from the likes of Alicia Keys, Aaliyah, and Al Greene, and rounded up the best first dance songs for your wedding day.

“YOUR SONG” BY ELTON JOHN

Elton John’s “Your Song” pretty much speaks for itself when it comes to romance. This 1970 classic is heartfelt and honest in all the best ways. For a more modern rendition? Opt for the crisp, stripped-down version by Ellie Goulding.

DOWNLOAD

“I FOUND YOU” BY ALABAMA SHAKES

With a casual, distinctive, and soulful sound, this Alabama Shakes song has lyrics like, “I finally found you” that suits the setting and make it a unique—and bluesy—option for your first dance.

DOWNLOAD

“ALL OF ME” BY BILLIE HOLIDAY

“You took the part that once was my heart / So why not take all of me” is a not-so-subtle love song that feels dreamy, genuine—and sets a sultry mood.

DOWNLOAD

“MARRY ME” BY TRAIN

This meet-cute melody from Train’s lead vocalist, Pat Monahan, is about the hypothetical of a love-at-first-sight moment, which is beautiful, sweet, and obviously, so wedding-worthy.

DOWNLOAD

“ENDLESS LOVE” BY LIONEL RICHIE & DIANA ROSS

This ’80s declaration of love by the powerhouse vocals of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross makes it one of the greatest duets of all time and ideal for a couple looking for an epic entry on to the dancefloor.

DOWNLOAD

“THE WAY I AM” BY INGRID MICHAELSON

Crisp sweetness is the best way to describe this 2007 hit with real yet quirky lyrics like “If you are chilly, here take my sweater / Your head is aching, I’ll make it better.”

DOWNLOAD

“THEY CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME” BY ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Introduced originally by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film Shall We Dance, the 1956 version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong is full of soul and feels both cool and classic.

DOWNLOAD

“FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE” BY STEVIE WONDER

An uptempo arrangement from music legend Stevie Wonder, this Motown masterpiece will set the tone for a fun evening of dining and dancing.

DOWNLOAD

“GROOVE IS IN THE HEART” BY DEEE-LITE

The top first dance, this dance band ditty is unconventional and unexpected for the couple that’s just looking to have a good time.

DOWNLOAD

“FLOAT” BY PACIFIC AIR

Your guests won’t hate swaying along to the sound of your first foray onto the dance floor when they’re enjoying the two of you taking a spin to this optimistic whistle tune.

DOWNLOAD

“WITH A GIRL LIKE YOU” BY THE TROGGS

“I want to spend my life with a girl like you / Ba ba ba ba bah ba ba ba ba” basically speaks for itself. This popular, mid-tempo sing-along by the English rock band that brought us “Wild Thing” in 1966, is first dance approved.

DOWNLOAD

“PUT IN ALL ON ME” BY ED SHEERAN FEAT. ELLA MAI

Sheeran’s “Perfect” had its run in weddings, and it’s a bit overplayed; opt for one of the chart topper’s latest collaborations with artist Ella Mai for a sensual, yet high energy, first dance pick.

DOWNLOAD

“COME AND GET YOUR LOVE” BY REDBONE

With an upbeat and albeit funky disposition, this 1973 classic from Native American rock band, Redbone, is a true crowd-pleaser.

DOWNLOAD

“FOREVER” BY BEN HARPER

DOWNLOAD

“CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF OF YOU” BY MS. LAURYN HILL

A classic rendition turned R&B, this “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” arrangement is casual, cool, and undoubtedly romantic.

DOWNLOAD

“AT YOUR BEST (YOU ARE LOVE)” BY AALIYAH

With a recent rendition from Frank Ocean and original takings by the Isley Brothers, “At Your Best” is an ever-evolving R&B staple. Somewhere in all of that lies Aaliyah’s ethereal take on the track—a silky-soft reimagining of reaffirmation.

DOWNLOAD

“IF I AIN’T GOT YOU” BY ALICIA KEYS

With one of the most iconic, lasting vocal performances of the last few decades, “If I Ain’t Got You” is a commanding surrender to vulnerability.

DOWNLOAD

“DONTCHANGE” BY MUSIQ SOULCHILD

“Dontchange” is quintessential heavy-handed early 2000s R&B. Musiq Soulchild is up-front, wind-in-the-hair (and the unbuttoned shirt) soul music, and while it borders on corny, there’s something to be said about being this explicitly romantic on your big day.

DOWNLOAD

“MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE” BY ADELE

Adele’s magic lies in the way she can make any hyperbole sound convincingly commonplace. “Make You Feel My Love,” the British singer’s version of Bob Dylan’s 1997 original, is so serious that it carries a seemingly somber undertone; but lines like, “Go to the ends of this Earth for you / To make you feel my love” make it a piano-laced love anthem for the ages.

DOWNLOAD

“STAY WITH YOU” BY JOHN LEGEND

If you want the John Legend effect, but don’t want to be one of three friends in your circle who’s first-danced to “All of Me,” this closing cut from the singer’s first album is perfect for a wholesome, contemporary pick.

DOWNLOAD

“AT LAST” BY ETTA JAMES

At its core, “At Last” is a song that’s basically about finding the right man after years of shitty dating—an uber-romantic sigh of relief. Etta James floats above a humming string section, celebrating the “dream that I could speak to / a dream to call my own.”

DOWNLOAD

“TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM ” BY AMY WINEHOUSE

For all of the times Amy Winehouse has sung of self-sabotage and tainted romance, there lies the handful of tracks that seem to prove why she believes in love at all. On “To Know Him Is To Love Him,” she takes a song that originally came out in 1958 and delivers a hauntingly stripped-back, lullaby-like version.

DOWNLOAD

“FIRST DAY OF MY LIFE” BY BRIGHT EYES

“First Day of My Life” leads with its lyrics. Paired with nothing but some light, acoustic guitar strums, frontman Conor Oberst’s delivery is closer to a soft-spoken speech than it is to singing when he delivers lines like, “This is the first day of my life / I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you.”

DOWNLOAD

“LET’S STAY TOGETHER” BY AL GREEN

An omnipresent classic with a steady drum line leading Green’s vocals, “Let’s Stay Together” is an obvious first dance choice that doesn’t spare its groove for lofty romanticism. It’s a convincing confession of all that’s everlasting, from the king of all things love.

DOWNLOAD

“MY CHERIE AMOUR” BY STEVIE WONDER

If you’re going to commit to eternity, let it be Stevie Wonder’s inimitable pipes that lead you there. With a sing-along “la-la-la” tying the track together, “My Cherie Amour” is a meaningful crowd-pleaser.

DOWNLOAD

“IT HAD TO BE YOU” BY RAY CHARLES

For something a bit more retro, “It Had to Be You” is Ray Charles’s shining, swinging take on a classic jazz standard.

DOWNLOAD

With a fairytale-like opening—complete with dazzling piano ripples and topped off with smooth horns—Curtis Mayfield’s “The Makings of You” is a dreamy ode to the woman he loves, captured by some of this century’s best songwriting.

DOWNLOAD

“SEND IT ON” BY D’ANGELO

D’Angelo as a first dance song isn’t necessarily a shy couple’s pick. Backed by Questlove on drums, “Send It On” is a soaring classic that swings in and out of rhythms, all while holding a certain sensuality.

DOWNLOAD

“BETTER TOGETHER” BY JACK JOHNSON

With lines about “mango trees” lead by harmonica notes and hums, “Better Together” is a simple, beachy love song that’s not doing too much, nor trying to say too much.

DOWNLOAD

“THAT’S HOW STRONG MY LOVE IS” BY OTIS REDDING

There are moments that Otis Redding sings with the enthusiasm of a near shout on “That’s How Strong My Love Is,” but he always seems to pull himself back into sweet, softer-spoken reassurance.

DOWNLOAD

“HOW SWEET IT IS (TO BE LOVED BY YOU)” BY JAMES TAYLOR

With an almost elementary-like effect, “How Sweet It Is” is a wholesome, jangle-y rendition of a Marvin Gaye original. Plus, iconic sing-along lines like, “I wanna stop / And thank you, baby” make it open for audience involvement.

DOWNLOAD

“BEST PART” BY DANIEL CAESAR FEAT. H.E.R.

The effortlessly ethereal pairing of H.E.R. and Daniel Caesar tackles the rare, non-corny duet on “Best Part,” a stunning exchange between two of modern R&B’s best voices.
